Relative Density Apparatus
The Relative Density Apparatus is used to determine the relative density of free-draining soils. Soils of this type normally do not respond well to conventional Proctor moisture-density compaction tests. Maximum density is determined by placing soil in special molds and densifying using a vertically vibrating table and surcharge. Minimum index density is determined by loose placement in the molds, using special pouring funnels, scoop, or shovel, depending on size of soil particles.
Semi-noiseless Vibratory Table has a cushioned steel 30 x 30″ (762 x 762 mm) vibrating deck activated by electromagnetic vibrator with over 100 lb (45.5 kg) actuator. The table has 750 lbs (341 kg) load capacity and requires 800 watts, 12 amps at 230 V. Table height is 21″ (533 mm). Vibration rate is 3600 VPM (3000 @ 50 Hz) and amplitude adjusts in accordance with ASTM requirements. The solid state circuitry allows precise amplitude control even with fluctuating voltage supplies.
Cylindrical metal unit weight Mold Sets for 0.1 and 0.5ft3 (2.83 and 14.2 liters) capacity have attached carrying handles and guide brackets for the Gauge Set. They come complete with detachable guide sleeve with clamp assembly, surcharge base plate with removable handle, and surcharge weight and handle. Mold included with Relative Density Apparatus Set is 6.000″ (152.4 mm) ID x 6.112″ (155.2 mm) IH; surcharge weight plus base plate has 56. 5 + 0.5 lb (25.5 + 0.2 kg) total weight. Larger mold with Set is 11.000 (279.4 mm) ID x 9.092″ (230.9 mm) IH with 190 + 2 lb (86.2 + 0.9 kg) total weight of base plate with surcharge weight. Model Gauge Set fits guide brackets of either Mold Set to measure distance from top of mold to top of base plate after densification (to compute volume change). Set includes a 2″ (50.8 mm) Dial Indicator, travel is 0.001″ (0.025 mm), and also a special holder to fit molds. A metal 3 x 12 x 1/8″ (76 x 305 x 3.2 mm) calibration bar is also included.
Accessory Pouring Funnel Set Model is required for loose placement of 3/8″ (9.5 mm) and finer soil. Relative Density Apparatus set includes two 6″ (152 mm) diameter x 12″ (305 mm) long metal cylinders, each with funnel and 6″ (152 mm) long delivery spout attached to one end. Spouts are 1″ (25.4 mm) and 1/2″ (12.7 mm) in diameter.
